Sikh rishta in Pakistan

Pakistan is home to some of the most revered places in the Sikh faith, and to Sikh families who have lived here for generations, from Nankana Sahib and Lahore to Peshawar and Hasan Abdal. Like other Pakistani families, Sikh families place great importance on the role of parents and elders in a rishta, and on finding a match who shares faith, values and a sense of community.

Because the community is close-knit and spread across several provinces, finding the right match through relatives alone is not always easy. RishteDesk is a privacy-first rishta service for Pakistani families of every faith, not a dating site. You can search for a Sikh rishta in Pakistan by city, education, profession and mother tongue, with every profile reviewed by a person and phone numbers never shown.

How Sikh families search for a rishta

In most Pakistani Sikh families, parents and elders lead the search, and relatives, the gurdwara community and trusted family friends help introduce families. Many parents now search online alongside these routes, particularly when a son or daughter lives in another city. Our guide on parents in the online rishta search explains how families can search together.

On RishteDesk you record your religion as Sikh and choose whether a shared faith is required or only preferred. Most families looking for a Sikh rishta in Pakistan will want a Sikh match, and you can make that a firm requirement. Each member decides this for themselves.

Family background and practice

Sikh families differ in their customs and in how they practise, and some place importance on family background or community. Mother tongue also varies: many families speak Punjabi, while families in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa often speak Pashto at home. RishteDesk lets you describe your background and practice in your own words and decide how much each matters, and it never ranks one family's way above another's.

Questions about faith in daily life

Instead of labels, most families find it more useful to talk about how faith will be lived at home. Helpful questions include:

  • How regularly does each family attend the gurdwara, and which one?
  • What practices around dress, turban and daily prayer are important to each of you?
  • How are Gurpurab, Vaisakhi and other occasions marked in each family?
  • Would the couple live with the husband's parents, and how are decisions made?
  • How would you like to raise children in terms of faith and Punjabi or other languages?

Our guide to questions to ask in a rishta meeting has more ideas for keeping these conversations honest and respectful.

Family involvement

Parents and elders usually play the central part in agreeing a rishta, and families often want to meet several times before anything is decided. RishteDesk supports this with a family circle: parents, siblings or another trusted relative can be given access to follow interests and conversations openly, so everyone stays informed.

Weddings and registration

Sikh weddings are usually solemnised through the Anand Karaj ceremony at the gurdwara, followed by celebrations according to family custom. Punjab has a law for Anand Karaj marriages, and families should check the registration requirements that apply to them where they live. Agree early on the scale of the wedding and expectations about gifts, and agree clearly that there will be no dowry demands.

Where Pakistani Sikh families live

Sikh families live in Punjab, especially around Nankana Sahib and in Lahore, and in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, particularly in Peshawar. Families also live near Hasan Abdal and in Rawalpindi, Islamabad and Karachi, with smaller communities elsewhere. You can find a rishta by city or search the whole of Pakistan.

A rishta between Peshawar and Nankana Sahib, or between Lahore and Karachi, can mean one partner moving to a new city and a new language at home. It helps to talk early about where the couple will live, what work each will do and how often they will visit family.

Pakistani-heritage Sikh families abroad

Some Sikh families with roots in Pakistan now live abroad, and some keep close ties with relatives here. If a proposal involves a move overseas, agree early where the couple will live and how the visa process will work. Privacy, safety and verification

In a close-knit community, discretion matters. On RishteDesk phone numbers and emails are never shown, photos stay private unless you choose to share them, and profiles are never shown to search engines. Conversations open only after both sides accept an interest, and in-app voice and video calls work without exchanging numbers.

Members can earn verification badges through a selfie check, an ID check and a video call with our team. Even so, confirm identity, education, work and any previous marriage yourself, and meet the family at home. Our rishta verification checklist and guide to matrimonial fraud and rishta scams explain the warning signs. A clear profile helps too; see our matrimonial profile example.
