How Punjabi families search for a rishta
Across Punjab, family background leads. Parents ask about the family's origins, the father's work, brothers and sisters, the household arrangement after marriage, and often the biradari — Arain, Jat, Rajput, Gujjar, Kashmiri, Sheikh, Awan, Malik, Syed and many others. Some families search only within their own; many no longer do. RishteDesk lets you record your background and decide how much it matters to your search.
Education and career have become equally important, especially among families whose children have studied at university. Increasingly, the question is not only "is it a good family?" but "will these two people understand each other?". Our guide to questions to ask in a rishta meeting helps with both.
Language and faith
Punjabi, Saraiki, Pothohari, Hindko and Urdu are all spoken in Punjabi homes. Most Punjabi families are Sunni or Shia Muslim; the province also has Pakistan's largest Christian community and historic Sikh and Hindu communities. RishteDesk is for families of every faith. See our Punjabi-speaking community page.
Punjab and the diaspora
Families from Punjab make up a large share of Pakistanis in the UK, Europe, the Gulf and North America. Gujrat, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot and the Pothohar in particular have very strong links to the UK and to Europe — Norway, Spain, Italy and Greece among them. See our pages for the UK and Europe, and read what to agree before the nikah.

Weddings and customs across Punjab
Punjabi weddings are famous for their scale and their music: dholki evenings, mayun, mehndi, the nikah and baraat, and the walima, often across several days. South Punjab has its own Saraiki traditions, and the Pothohar its own. Rules on function timings and the number of dishes have changed weddings in the province, and many families now choose smaller events. Dowry and gift expectations are best discussed openly and early — including agreeing that there will be none.
