Rishta in Azad Jammu and Kashmir

Azad Jammu and Kashmir is a region of close-knit families, green valleys and deep ties abroad. Mirpur and the surrounding districts in particular have some of the strongest family links to the United Kingdom of anywhere in Pakistan, and a very large share of British Pakistanis trace their roots here.

RishteDesk helps families in Azad Kashmir, and Kashmiri families abroad, search for a rishta by city, family background, language, education and faith — with every profile reviewed by a person and no phone numbers ever shared.

Cities and districts

  • Mirpur — the region's best-known city abroad, with family ties to Britain across generations.
  • Muzaffarabad — the capital, where the Neelum and Jhelum rivers meet.
  • Kotli, Bhimber, Rawalakot, Bagh, Sudhnoti, Hattian Bala and the Neelum valley.

Many AJK families also live in Rawalpindi, Islamabad and Gujrat, and in Punjab more widely.

How families in AJK search for a rishta

Family comes first. Many families prefer rishtas within the extended family or biradari — Jat, Rajput, Sudhan, Gujjar, Awan, Mughal, Syed, Abbasi and many others — and elders lead the process. Where families look further, they want to know the other family thoroughly first. RishteDesk supports that: a parent can manage the profile, families can speak first, and a wali can be present in conversations.

Language

Pahari-Pothwari is widely spoken in Mirpur, Kotli and Bhimber and among British Kashmiris; Pahari and Hindko in Muzaffarabad and the north; Gojri among Gujjar families; and Kashmiri in some families. Urdu is shared by all. You can record your mother tongue and make it a preference.

AJK and the United Kingdom

Rishtas between families in Mirpur and families in Birmingham, Bradford, Manchester, Luton, Oldham and other British towns have been common for decades. Many work very well. They also raise questions that should be settled before the nikah: where the couple will live, how the UK spouse visa process works, how long the couple may be apart, and what the spouse from Pakistan will do for work. Read what to agree before the nikah, see our UK page, and check current rules on the official UK family visa pages.

For British-born members, it matters to speak directly with the other person, not only through parents. Expectations about independence, work and living with in-laws can differ between someone raised in Bradford and someone raised in Kotli; talk about them openly.

Weddings and customs

Weddings in Azad Kashmir combine Pahari, Punjabi and Kashmiri traditions — mehndi, the nikah, the baraat and the walima — often with large gatherings of relatives, and sometimes with relatives travelling from the UK. Many families hold functions in both countries. Agree early where each event will be held, who hosts what, and expectations around gifts.

Checking a proposal

Close family networks remain valuable; add the basics. Confirm identity, education and work — including immigration status and work in the UK, on a video call with documents shown — ask directly about previous marriages and health, and never send money to anyone you have not met. Our rishta verification checklist and guide to matrimonial fraud explain what to look for.

Tips for AJK families

  • Be clear whether you want a match in AJK, in Pakistan, in the UK, or any of these.
  • Discuss the visa route and a realistic timeline before any engagement.
  • Keep photographs restricted to families you have accepted.
  • Keep early conversations on the platform, with a wali present if you prefer.
  • Make sure the nikah is properly registered and documents kept safe.

Education and the next generation

Universities in Muzaffarabad, Mirpur, Kotli, Rawalakot and Bagh mean more young people from AJK now have degrees and professional ambitions, and many daughters want to continue working after marriage. Families increasingly look for a match whose education and plans fit their child's, whether in AJK, in the cities of Pakistan or abroad. Say so clearly in your profile.
